Objects of the Corporation
To establish facilities
to carry out the objects of the Corporation, and to create
healthy, meaningful work, Our goal is to welcome and
encourage people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to
engage in creative, productive endeavors and utilize their
inherent talents to serve their communities as
volunteers. Our office is set up to
co-ordinate activities and communications, and to house
digital equipment and information. We are creating permanent
and part-time positions, both paid and volunteer, in a
number of areas. Two to three individuals are required to
form the OM System Software support staff. This staff
answers questions about our software by phone, fax, and
e-mail. Other positions involve administering and promoting
the activities of the Corporation.
To arrange and conduct
training for volunteers, professionals, and groups, in the
use of existing and emerging communication and information
technologies in order to further the work of the
Organizations, Drawing on Corporation staff
and industry volunteers for expert advice, training, and
access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, we
intend to develop workshops and courses which will help
non-profit organizations become more
self-sufficient. Our facilities, and
facilities available to us, include fully equipped
audio-production studios and computer facilities possessing
the necessary hardware and software for individual and group
training sessions. Some topics: We employ qualified paid and
volunteer staff who are available for on-site assistance
also. These individuals are able to provide consultation on
acquiring and setting up computer systems and other
technologies, and provide training in the use of these
technologies.
To develop products,
systems, and services in communications technologies which
are designed to meet the needs of the
Organizations, Currently our efforts are
focused on software design by volunteer professionals. We
are now working under a federal grant to complete the
Lit-Link
Database, a database
designed specifically for literacy organizations in Alberta.
This software is an organizational tool that will allow
these community volunteer organizations to store name,
address, and other information of their students and
volunteer tutors, to print phone lists and mailing labels
with ease, to match students and tutors according to
matching preferences, to track donors and fees, and to
easily produce year-end statistics for Alberta Advanced
Education & Career Development. The test pilot phase of
this project has been completed and version 1.0(a) was
released in Oct 1997. Work has begin on adapting the
software for use by literacy organizations throughout
Canada, and on other customized applications. Future plans include
developing educational video and board games.
To co-operate with other
agencies and professionals to provide and enhance effective
networking and linking of the Organizations through
appropriate technologies, Through our products and
services, we intend to connect organizations of similar
mandate, so that they may feel less isolated and take
advantage of the benefits of networking within the community
and beyond. Our aforementioned training and consultation
services will provide not-for-profit organizations with an
understanding of the Internet and other communications
technologies as important tools for networking. Also, we shall co-operate
with companies that can provide not-for-profit organizations
with the networking tools they require. For example, we
shall seek out companies that provide free Internet services
to not-for-profit organizations or that wish to donate
office equipment to not-for-profits.
To provide creative
services and products to support effective
communication, In order to achieve this
objective, we will be involved in graphics, film/video,
music, and audio production that will help not-for-profit
organizations effectively communicate their messages and
ideas. Examples of products/services that we intend to
provide are staff training and motivational videos,
promotional videos, and design/ layout of literature and web
sites (including audio, animation, and real-time video)
promoting the causes of not-for-profit organizations.
To maintain ongoing
organizational, software, and audio-visual support, and
manage information resources for the
Organizations, We intend to conduct,
compile, and assist research activities that support the
objects of the Corporation. We will publish this work by
setting up and managing a World Wide Web site that can be
accessed by any not-for-profit organization on the Internet.
The web site will provide links to other web sites (such as
the NALD web site) that are specialized to meet the research
and operational needs of various types of NPO's (our focus
will initially be literacy organizations). This way, we will
be able to help direct those we serve to information
resources that are relevant to their objectives. To promote community
initiatives such as co-operative housing, environmental
education and recreation, and to perform all activities of
the Corporation while respecting and preserving cultural
diversity, and with due concern for the
environment. We intend to participate in
supporting & creating student and other co-operative
housing through organizational support, Internet access,
professional counseling, and other services of the
Corporation. We would like to participate
in environmental research, and production and distribution
of educational literature created independently and for
other organizations. We intend to use language,
offer products and services, and support causes that promote
peace and co-operation, and are increasingly sensitive to
the needs of the environment:
